SUMMARY:Kaleidoscope Series: Advocacy and Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Architects are advocates\, whether we realize that or not. Every day we advocate for our clients by working with contractors and consultants to ensure their projects are successful. We have also become more environmentally conscious\, advocating for zero-carbon buildings\, more resilient cities\, and equitable communities. \nHowever\, when it comes to advocacy\, we are often the last ones we\, and often firm leadership\, consider. We are tasked with ensuring the health\, safety\, and welfare of the public we serve. Yet we often overlook our own. \nJoin us for a panel discussion with queer architects centered on how we can advocate for LGBTQIA+ professionals and others. We will discuss advocacy within and outside of architecture\, how to advocate for change as architects in a time when the queer community faces an increasingly hostile political environment and share resources available through AIA and other organizations.

SUMMARY:Designing My Future K-12 Summer Camp\, Ages 10 - 13
DESCRIPTION:The AIA Dallas Education Outreach Committee is proud to partner with the AD EX to offer Designing My Future K-12 Camps\, a hands-on program that introduces students ages 6–18 to the world of architecture and design. Launched in 2020 by practicing architects in collaboration with K-12 and nonprofit educators\, these camps foster creative thinking\, enhance problem-solving skills\, and explore fundamental design principles while providing insight into careers in architecture\, engineering\, and construction. \nEach camp is a unique experience where students engage with architectural concepts\, connect with architecture students and professionals\, and gain inspiration to envision a future in the field. Campers learn the basics of design thinking and apply their creativity to real-world projects. They tour downtown landmarks\, visit local architecture firms\, and discover the people and ideas behind the built environment. Through activities like scavenger hunts\, design challenges\, 3D modeling\, and skyscraper-building projects\, students develop skills that extend far beyond the camp itself. \nBeyond technical learning\, Designing My Future Camps help students build confidence in self-expression through writing\, drawing\, public speaking\, and play. By tackling creative challenges and collaborating with peers\, participants develop essential skills that will serve them in any future career. Whether experimenting with design principles or working on hands-on construction projects\, students leave camp with a deeper understanding of architecture and its impact on the world around them. \nVolunteers are needed to assist with our camp activities\, answer camper questions\, and share their experiences in becoming an architect. SUMMARY:Firm Friday\, hosted by LPA Design Studios
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 15\, 3:00 – 5:00 PM\nLPA Design Studios in Dallas\, 1801 North Lamar Street\, Suite 150\nFREE\, In Person Event \nFirm Friday’s is a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes. Join us for an informal gathering and social happy hour on Friday\, August 15. LPA Design Studios is opening their doors\, giving you an inside look at their work and office culture. \n  \nABOUT LPA DESIGN STUDIOS \n“LPA Design Studios has established itself as a trailblazer in sustainable\, high-performance architecture\, blending a mission-driven ethos with innovative\, interdisciplinary design practices.” \nFounded in 1965\, the firm grew from humble beginnings into a dynamic collective of architects\, engineers\, landscape architects\, and designers\, all united by the shared responsibility of addressing climate change and fostering equitable\, thriving communities. \nEarly in its history\, LPA embraced sustainability as a cornerstone of its practice. As one of the first firms to advocate for LEED certification\, LPA delivered groundbreaking projects like the Ford Premier Automotive Group headquarters\, the first LEED NC-certified building in the United States. By 2004\, LPA committed to surpassing California’s stringent Title 24 energy code by 25% for every project\, a standard they have upheld and exceeded through meticulous integration of sustainable practices. The firm’s early adoption of the AIA 2030 Commitment further underscored its leadership in decarbonizing the built environment. \nLPA’s achievements have earned it national and international recognition. The firm has received numerous AIA awards\, including a COTE Top Ten Plus Award and several AIA Committee on Architecture for Education honors. Projects like the Lanier High School Renovation in San Antonio and the West Hollywood Aquatics and Recreation Center exemplify the firm’s ability to address pressing social and environmental challenges while creating spaces that inspire and uplift communities. \nLPA’s influence extends beyond its projects. Through partnerships with universities such as Cal Poly and the University of Texas at San Antonio\, the firm has helped reshape architectural education by promoting integrated design and sustainability. LPA’s thought leadership is evident in its participation in professional organizations\, conferences\, and publications\, where it advocates for a holistic\, data-driven approach to addressing climate change. \nLooking ahead\, LPA remains committed to pushing the boundaries of sustainable design and fostering a more equitable and resilient built environment. By demonstrating that high-performance\, carbon-neutral buildings are achievable for every client\, budget\, and scale\, LPA Design Studios continues to set the standard for the architecture profession. \nArchitecture Firm Award 2025: LPA Design Studios
