SUMMARY:Designing My Future K-12 Summer Camp\, Ages 10 - 13
DESCRIPTION:The AIA Dallas Education Outreach Committee is proud to partner with the AD EX to offer Designing My Future K-12 Camps\, a hands-on program that introduces students ages 6–18 to the world of architecture and design. Launched in 2020 by practicing architects in collaboration with K-12 and nonprofit educators\, these camps foster creative thinking\, enhance problem-solving skills\, and explore fundamental design principles while providing insight into careers in architecture\, engineering\, and construction. \nEach camp is a unique experience where students engage with architectural concepts\, connect with architecture students and professionals\, and gain inspiration to envision a future in the field. Campers learn the basics of design thinking and apply their creativity to real-world projects. They tour downtown landmarks\, visit local architecture firms\, and discover the people and ideas behind the built environment. Through activities like scavenger hunts\, design challenges\, 3D modeling\, and skyscraper-building projects\, students develop skills that extend far beyond the camp itself. \nBeyond technical learning\, Designing My Future Camps help students build confidence in self-expression through writing\, drawing\, public speaking\, and play. By tackling creative challenges and collaborating with peers\, participants develop essential skills that will serve them in any future career. Whether experimenting with design principles or working on hands-on construction projects\, students leave camp with a deeper understanding of architecture and its impact on the world around them. \nVolunteers are needed to assist with our camp activities\, answer camper questions\, and share their experiences in becoming an architect. Sign up today!

As one of the first firms to advocate for LEED certification\, LPA delivered groundbreaking projects like the Ford Premier Automotive Group headquarters\, the first LEED NC-certified building in the United States. By 2004\, LPA committed to surpassing California’s stringent Title 24 energy code by 25% for every project\, a standard they have upheld and exceeded through meticulous integration of sustainable practices. The firm’s early adoption of the AIA 2030 Commitment further underscored its leadership in decarbonizing the built environment. \nLPA’s achievements have earned it national and international recognition. The firm has received numerous AIA awards\, including a COTE Top Ten Plus Award and several AIA Committee on Architecture for Education honors. Projects like the Lanier High School Renovation in San Antonio and the West Hollywood Aquatics and Recreation Center exemplify the firm’s ability to address pressing social and environmental challenges while creating spaces that inspire and uplift communities. \nLPA’s influence extends beyond its projects. Through partnerships with universities such as Cal Poly and the University of Texas at San Antonio\, the firm has helped reshape architectural education by promoting integrated design and sustainability. LPA’s thought leadership is evident in its participation in professional organizations\, conferences\, and publications\, where it advocates for a holistic\, data-driven approach to addressing climate change. \nLooking ahead\, LPA remains committed to pushing the boundaries of sustainable design and fostering a more equitable and resilient built environment. By demonstrating that high-performance\, carbon-neutral buildings are achievable for every client\, budget\, and scale\, LPA Design Studios continues to set the standard for the architecture profession. \nArchitecture Firm Award 2025: LPA Design Studios

SUMMARY:Architecture Research Office (ARO) and Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects (NBW) on Interdisciplinary Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Architecture Matters Series\, Presented by McLaughlin Insurance\nTuesday\, September 30\, 5:30 – 7:00 PM\nAD EX\, 325 N. St. Paul Street\, Suite 150\nFREE for AIA Members\, FREE for Students\, $10 General Admission\nIn-Person Event\, 1.0 LU | HSW \nOur current cultural moment calls on design professionals to embrace a model of collaboration that leads to stronger\, more impactful projects – projects that center the needs and missions of both clients and the communities they serve. As the urgency of climate change and social inequality intensifies\, architects and landscape architects are increasingly leading efforts with lasting consequences. With this responsibility comes the imperative to move beyond form-making and spectacle in favor of a team-oriented approach that connects architecture to its natural and cultural contexts in a holistic way. From this kind of deep collaboration\, true resilience and sustainability can emerge. \nArchitecture Research Office (ARO) and Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects (NBW) have partnered on projects such as the Rothko Chapel\, Rice University\, and the Olana State Historic Site\, among others\, and have developed a collaborative model that prioritizes public experience\, centers cultural narratives\, responds to environmental conditions\, and supports the missions of cultural nonprofits. In these examples\, ARO led the planning for the Rothko Chapel\, and NBW for Olana. Each firm then played a key role in hiring and guiding the other as the projects progressed. This reciprocal\, open-handed approach to leadership exemplifies true collaboration between architecture and landscape architecture in service of mission-driven design.
