SUMMARY:Architecture on Tap: Northeast Texas
DESCRIPTION:Program No. P1323: Fiberglass Fenestration in Commercial Buildings \n1.0 LU | HSW  \nCome join us at True Vine Brewery for the inaugural Architecture on Tap event for AIA Northeast Texas. Sponsored by Pella. \nProgram Description: \nWhether designing sustainable commercial or institutional building types\, architects carefully consider the qualities and long-term advantages of fenestration materials. Windows and doors provide essential protection and architectural character to a building\, and must also respond to owner-driven requirements like aesthetics\, cost\, performance\, maintenance\, and life cycle. Fiberglass composite is suitable for windows and doors in any climate or building type. More durable than aluminum or vinyl\, with the thermal efficiency of wood\, fiberglass composite windows are an economically competitive alternative to aluminum and vinyl windows. The multiple advantages and benefits of fiberglass composite make it a versatile fenestration choice because of its strength\, durability\, low maintenance\, energy efficiency\, and sustainable qualities\, as well as its resistance to corrosion\, dents\, and scratches. \n

SUMMARY:Architecture Research Office (ARO) and Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects (NBW) on Interdisciplinary Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Architecture Matters Series\, Presented by McLaughlin Insurance\nTuesday\, September 30\, 5:30 – 7:00 PM\nAD EX\, 325 N. St. Paul Street\, Suite 150\nFREE for AIA Members\, FREE for Students\, $10 General Admission\nIn-Person Event\, 1.0 LU | HSW \nOur current cultural moment calls on design professionals to embrace a model of collaboration that leads to stronger\, more impactful projects – projects that center the needs and missions of both clients and the communities they serve. As the urgency of climate change and social inequality intensifies\, architects and landscape architects are increasingly leading efforts with lasting consequences. With this responsibility comes the imperative to move beyond form-making and spectacle in favor of a team-oriented approach that connects architecture to its natural and cultural contexts in a holistic way. From this kind of deep collaboration\, true resilience and sustainability can emerge. \nArchitecture Research Office (ARO) and Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects (NBW) have partnered on projects such as the Rothko Chapel\, Rice University\, and the Olana State Historic Site\, among others\, and have developed a collaborative model that prioritizes public experience\, centers cultural narratives\, responds to environmental conditions\, and supports the missions of cultural nonprofits. In these examples\, ARO led the planning for the Rothko Chapel\, and NBW for Olana. Each firm then played a key role in hiring and guiding the other as the projects progressed. This reciprocal\, open-handed approach to leadership exemplifies true collaboration between architecture and landscape architecture in service of mission-driven design.

SUMMARY:Architecture Matters: AI Talk Moderated by Phil Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:The Architecture Matters Series is presented by McLaughlin Insurance. This event is free for all!  \nProgram Description: \nArtificial intelligence is the next disruptive technology buffeting the practice of architecture\, following close on the heels of BIM. But unlike BIM\, AI seems to be everywhere\, pressing upon the public\, clients\, collaborators\, builders\, and regulators as well as architects. Rather than react to every breathless article and social media post about our future robot overlords\, how should architects think about these questions and formulate an intelligent response? This discussion is designed to introduce basic concepts of AI\, contextualize its evolution in architecture\, and analyze its implications in an effort to equip architects to think strategically about the technologically enabled future. \nLearning Objectives:  \n\nExplore and evaluate the evolutionary trajectory of technology in the AECO industry through the lenses of use of tools and specific practice experience.\nIdentify key technological\, social\, economic\, and business trends potentially affected by the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence.\nAssess and analyze the impact of technological disruption on design firms through the examination of business strategy and models\nSpeculate on professional and practice futures\, particularly value propositions of design practice\, of autonomous computation. Identify opportunities and threats.\n\n1.0 LU

SUMMARY:Speaking the Same Language: The Common Materials Framework
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Architecture Matters Professional Development Series \nPresented by Existing Conditions\, Organized by the Committee on the Environment \n1.0 HSW \nHow do we speak about and evaluate the sustainable attributes of building materials? The current model is a mix of ideas and goals regarding the definition of a sustainable material. Sustainable material certifications have become difficult to navigate. Confusion rules the market as architects and manufacturers attempt to answer all the questions and goals of the various approaches to sustainability. \nWhen the AIA launched the A&D Materials Pledge\, a common language was laid out with common goals regarding human health\, social health & equity\, ecosystem health\, climate health\, and circular economy. The Common Materials Framework\, further outlined by mindfulMaterials\, is the structure for this language\, helping to define the impact of materials. This common framework will help the industry to measure progress and accomplishments; consistency is key. \nLunch will be served to all pre-registered attendees. Republic Center Valet Parking will be validated for this event. Arrive early for parking and lunch so the program can begin right at noon.
