SUMMARY:Committee on the Environment: Form Before Fuel
DESCRIPTION:Form Before Fuel\n  \n\n\nEnergy efficiency is determined long before mechanical\, electrical\, and plumbing systems are discussed. Early architectural decisions—such as massing\, orientation\, window-to-wall ratio\, and envelope performance—can lock in a building’s energy use before any systems are selected. By viewing energy efficiency as a design challenge\, not a technology problem\, architects can significantly influence building performance when changes are most impactful and cost-effective. \nWhile Energy Use Intensity (EUI) targets and the AIA 2030 Commitment are widely discussed\, energy performance is often perceived as the responsibility of engineering consultants. In reality\, many of the most consequential energy decisions are embedded within the architectural design itself\, often before consultants are hired. Rather than treating energy modeling solely as a late-stage code compliance requirement\, this program explores its value as a design tool during concept and schematic design. A practical framework—reduce demand\, optimize systems\, then incorporate renewable energy—is introduced to demonstrate how sequencing design decisions can prevent oversized systems\, higher first costs\, poor long-term ROI\, and occupant discomfort. \nThe course also addresses common misconceptions\, limitations of rules of thumb\, and the appropriate use of energy modeling to support informed architectural decision-making. \n\n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\nIdentify how early architectural decisions like massing\, orientation\, window-to-wall ratio\, and envelope performance affect energy use\, thermal comfort\, moisture control\, and occupant health.\nApply climate-appropriate EUI targets and AIA 2030 benchmarks to guide early design strategies that improve indoor environmental quality\, operational resilience\, and long-term building safety.\nExplain how conceptual energy modeling can inform design during early phases to support healthy indoor conditions\, prevent performance failures\, and recognize limitations that may impact occupant comfort and durability.\nImplement a sequenced design approach to reduce demand\, right-size systems\, and evaluate renewables to enhance occupant comfort\, reduce risk of system failure\, improve resilience during extreme weather\, and support safe building operations.\n\nThis course has been approved by AIA CES for 1.0 LU | HSW. \n\n\n  \nLunch will be provided for all pre-registered attendees. Parking will be validated through Republic Center Valet.

SUMMARY:Designing My Future K-12 Camps\, Ages 14-18
DESCRIPTION:Designing My Future K-12 Camps are a hands-on program that introduces students ages 6–18 to the world of architecture and design. Launched in 2020 by practicing architects in collaboration with K-12 and nonprofit educators\, these camps foster creative thinking\, enhance problem-solving skills\, and explore fundamental design principles while providing insight into careers in architecture\, engineering\, and construction. \nEach camp is a unique experience where students engage with architectural concepts\, connect with architecture students and professionals\, and gain inspiration to envision a future in the field. Campers learn the basics of design thinking and apply their creativity to real-world projects. They tour downtown landmarks\, visit local architecture firms\, and discover the people and ideas behind the built environment. Through activities like scavenger hunts\, design challenges\, 3D modeling\, and skyscraper-building projects\, students develop skills that extend far beyond the camp itself. \nBeyond technical learning\, Designing My Future Camps help students build confidence in self-expression through writing\, drawing\, public speaking\, and play. By tackling creative challenges and collaborating with peers\, participants develop essential skills that will serve them in any future career. Whether experimenting with design principles or working on hands-on construction projects\, students leave camp with a deeper understanding of architecture and its impact on the world around them.

SUMMARY:AIA | TEXO Industry Mixer & Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT!  \nYou’re invited to join us on April 28 at KSC for an engaging Lunch & Learn\, followed by drinks and networking. \nTechnology is accelerating the pace of design and construction\, but project outcomes still depend on how well architects\, VDC teams\, and builders align expectations—from schematic design through field execution. \nThis panel workshop shares practical coordination strategies\, real-world reconciliation approaches\, and fabrication-informed workflows that help teams reduce rework\, protect design intent\, and improve constructability. \nLearning Objectives \n\nIdentify the most common coordination breakdowns across SD\, DD\, CD\, and CA\, and apply phase-specific prevention tactics to reduce downstream RFIs and rework.\nDescribe how early modeling standards and BIM Execution Plan (BEP) decisions influence constructability\, cost certainty\, and schedule risk later in the project.\nEvaluate structured design reconciliation methods that bridge design intent and construction reality by surfacing clashes\, scope gaps\, and constructability constraints before mobilization.\nApply communication practices that improve cross-disciplinary collaboration—using technology as a shared language rather than a silo—resulting in clearer coordination and decision-making.\nSpecify what information is most valuable for builders (tolerances\, assemblies\, sequencing constraints\, access/clearances) and map it to the design team’s deliverable timeline.\n\nThis course is approved for 1.5 LUs.

SUMMARY:Small Firms Roundtable: TBAE Q&A with Mike Alvarado and Steve Ramirez
DESCRIPTION:The Small Firms Roundtable is pleased to welcome Mike Alvarado and Steve Ramirez from the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners (TBAE) for an open discussion on licensure\, regulation\, and professional practice as they relate to small firms. \nMike and Steve will provide a brief overview of TBAE’s role\, followed by a moderated conversation and audience Q&A addressing topics such as licensing pathways\, renewals\, continuing education\, business registration requirements\, and enforcement processes. \nThis session will focus on how these regulations affect day-to-day operations\, professional responsibility\, and risk management within small-firm practice—and will offer an opportunity to gain clarity and ask questions directly of the officials who administer them. \nComplimentary parking provided through Republic Center Valet. This program is under review by AIA CES for continuing education credits.

SUMMARY:COTE: New Passive House Projects in North Texas
DESCRIPTION:The Committee on the Environment (COTE) is a knowledge-based committee that educates and advocates for built environments that promote a healthy\, sustainable\, and equitable future for all communities and natural environments in North Texas. \n\n“New Passive House Projects (Finally) in North Texas” \nThis program explores Passive House design as a comprehensive approach to high-performance\, resilient\, and sustainable buildings. Participants will engage core principles—including building orientation\, high-performance enclosures\, airtightness\, and ventilation—while examining how these strategies are applied in real-world contexts. Through regional case studies from North Texas\, the course demonstrates how architects respond to climate\, site\, material\, and construction constraints\, reinforcing the value of integrated design and environmental stewardship. The program also addresses the coordination of architectural\, structural\, mechanical\, and renewable energy systems\, highlighting how interdisciplinary collaboration supports energy efficiency\, occupant health\, and alignment with Phius standards. \nLearning Outcomes:  \n\nParticipants will learn fundamental Passive House design principles in support of high‑performance\, resilient\, and sustainable building design.\nParticipants will analyze Passive House case studies from North Texas and the region by evaluating design responses to climate\, site\, materials\, and construction constraints.\nParticipants will review coordination of architectural\, structural\, mechanical\, and renewable energy systems and evaluate the effect of coordination on energy efficiency\, occupant health\, and Phius performance standards.\nParticipants will be able to articulate the architect’s role in advancing sustainable practice by connecting applied research\, professional advocacy\, and regulatory engagement to broader AIA priorities related to climate action\, carbon reduction\, and responsible resource use.\n\n1.0 LU | HSW \nParking will be validated through Republic Center Valet.
