SUMMARY:Architecture Matters: Who Stole the Soul?
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Architecture Matters Lecture Series. Presented by McLaughlin Insurance.  \nArchitecture has never faced more competing demands. Cost\, schedule\, risk management\, sustainability\, wellness\, technology\, and performance metrics increasingly shape the decisions that define our buildings. Yet amid this complexity\, architects face an urgent question: What happened to beauty? What happened to meaning? Who stole the soul? \nIn this presentation\, Vandana Nayak and Ron Stelmarski of Perkins&Will examine the tension between architecture as a technical exercise and architecture as a cultural act. Through projects\, process\, setbacks\, and breakthroughs\, they explore what it takes to create beautiful\, memorable places in a profession often driven by expedience. \nDrawing from recent\, diverse project types and scales\, the session will reveal the thinking behind the work\, from ideation and model making to storytelling and the search for inspiration and meaning. It will confront questions facing the profession today: Does design excellence survive growth? Does firm size matter? Does place still matter in a global practice? Does geography influence design culture? How do architects preserve design integrity when every force seems to push toward the ordinary? \nJoin us to explore the deliberate effort required for a global practice to avoid a corporate\, anonymous identity and instead cultivate architecture rooted in craft\, place\, and human experience. Soulful architecture is not a luxury. It is an obligation that demands courage\, conviction\, and leadership.
