DELEGATED DESIGN – WHAT DOES IT MEAN AND HOW TO COMMUNICATE IT TO THE CONTRACTOR
As Owners continue to whittle down architectural fees, architects seeks to transfer design responsibility to the Contractor and their sub-contractors for portions of the work that require engineering. Commonly used systems include such items as cold formed metal framing, stairs, handrails/guardrails, and roofing systems.
- Understand what delegated design means and what documentation should be requested.
- Learn what the architect’s responsibility is for reviewing submittals.
- Learn to identify what products/systems should fall into the delegated design category.

Doug Hartman has spent most of his 43 year career in the DFW area as an architect, specifier, construction administrator, and sustainability advocate. The company he founded, Inspec, has served as an independent consultant to area architects for the last 31 years. He is a fellow in both the AIA and CSI, earning both distinctions for his efforts in continuing education of fellow architects.
