ELEVATORS 101– WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO PROPERLY DESIGN/SPECIFY

Elevators come in a variety of sizes, types, and applications.  Understanding when to specify a particular type/size is important to ensuring the devices meet the needs of the users.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn to difference between holed, holeless, and roped hydraulic elevators, and when each should be considered. 
  • Understand the difference between traction machine room elevators and machine room-less electric elevators, and the capabilities of each. 
  • Learn what a LULA elevator is and when should it be considered. 
  • Understand the cost differences between the various options. Know when it might be time to enlist the help of a vertical transportation consultant.

Doug Hartman has spent most of his 43 year career in the DFW area as an architect, specifier, construction administrator, and sustainability advocate.  The company he founded,  Inspec, has served as an independent consultant to area architects for the last 31 years. He is a fellow in both the AIA and CSI, earning both distinctions for his efforts in continuing education of fellow architects.
