The Architecture Matters Series is presented by McLaughlin Insurance. This event is free for all!

Program Description:

Artificial intelligence is the next disruptive technology buffeting the practice of architecture, following close on the heels of BIM. But unlike BIM, AI seems to be everywhere, pressing upon the public, clients, collaborators, builders, and regulators as well as architects. Rather than react to every breathless article and social media post about our future robot overlords, how should architects think about these questions and formulate an intelligent response? This discussion is designed to introduce basic concepts of AI, contextualize its evolution in architecture, and analyze its implications in an effort to equip architects to think strategically about the technologically enabled future.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explore and evaluate the evolutionary trajectory of technology in the AECO industry through the lenses of use of tools and specific practice experience.
  2. Identify key technological, social, economic, and business trends potentially affected by the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence.
  3. Assess and analyze the impact of technological disruption on design firms through the examination of business strategy and models
  4. Speculate on professional and practice futures, particularly value propositions of design practice, of autonomous computation. Identify opportunities and threats.

Phil Bernstein is Deputy Dean and Professor, Adjunct at the Yale School of Architecture, where he teaches courses in professional practice, project delivery, and technology. He was formerly a vice president at Autodesk, where he was responsible for setting the company’s AEC vision and strategy for technology. Prior to joining Autodesk, Phil practiced architecture as an associate principal at Cesar Pelli & Associates where he managed many of the firm’s most complex commissions, including projects for Reagan National Airport, the Mayo Clinic, UCLA, and Goldman Sachs. He writes extensively on issues of architectural practice and technology, and his books include Architecture | Design | Data – Practice Competency in the Era of Computation (Birkhauser, 2018) and Machine Learning: Architectural Futures in the Era of Artificial Intelligence (RIBA, 2022). Phil has been honored twice by DesignIntelligence as one of the “30 Most Admired Educators in Architecture” and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. He received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Architecture from Yale and is licensed to practice in California.
