SFRT: HEW 300 Magnesium Oxide (MgO) Underlayment Panels in Multifamily Buildings

Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen
November 8, 2024 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Please RSVP to Brad Russell via email by clicking the red “RSVP” button above and using the subject line “RSVP for November 8th”

Description: All multifamily buildings must meet code requirements for fire-resistance between dwelling units and meet requirements for acoustical performance. This course explores the design and construction of Type III and V wood-framed buildings using MgO panels as flooring underlayment. The course begins by explaining the physical and structural characteristics of MgO as a material. It also explains how MgO panels can meet code requirements for sound attenuation and fire resistance. This course also compares and contrasts the performance and installation procedures and the impacts on construction cycle time of MgO panels versus wet-laid gypsum underlayment. Field support and specification support for design professionals will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives

After completion of this course, participants will be equipped to:

  1. Understand general characteristics of magnesium oxide (MgO) panels in terms of their composition and performance in floor assemblies in multifamily projects.
  2. Communicate the fire-resistance performance and testing standards that support MgO panels ability to provide fire safety in buildings.
  3. Assess the sound attenuation performance of MgO panels as underlayment in terms of meeting or exceeding code requirements for multifamily buildings withing floor/ceiling assemblies.
  4. Compare the use of MgO panels as underlayment with other common underlayment alternatives, particularly wet-laid gypsum, to appropriately specify MgO panels in multifamily floor assemblies.
