2024 COTE Wrap-Up

As 2024 ends, the Committee on the Environment (COTE) is already planning programs and events for 2025! If you didn’t have a chance to participate in our events this year, here’s is a little recap…

We kicked off the new year with an ESG presentation given by Sam Watkins with BRW Architects and a panel discussion moderated by Varun Kohli, Director of Sustainability at Corgan in New York City.

In May, the Sustainable is Attainable exhibition and immersive experience focused on the goals set by the Dallas Comprehensive Environmental Climate Action Plan (CECAP) with informative knowledge panels and visual aids to promote the innovative solutions and technologies available. The exhibition covered topics such as water conservation, energy efficiency, and air quality improvement and focused on moving Dallas into a greener future by imparting practical knowledge and skills for sustainable living.

In addition, COTE sponsored “Speaking the Same Language: The Common Materials Framework”, an educational event with Allison Smith, Sustainability Manager of HKS. Often referred to as CMF, the Common Materials Framework was developed by mindfulMaterials as a foundation for discussing material impacts. Seen as a “unifying force,” the goal is to provide a framework to discuss human health, climate health, eco-system health, social health and equity, and circularity of materials.

In October, we rounded out the year with an educational discussion and in-person tour of the Quadrangle in Uptown Dallas led by the Omniplan design team.

Along the way, we had monthly meetings, micro learning sessions, and a couple happy hours!

If you are looking to get involved with COTE in 2025, please fill out an interest form or come meet our incoming committee chair, David Stewart, and vice-chair, Joseph Boring, at the AIA Dallas Committee Fair on January 27, 2025!
